Recently I was asked the question: What should you look for in a water heater, and when should it be replaced?

When I asked for some sage advice around the office, this is what I learned:

1.) Warranties. If you’re willing to pay more for an extended warranty, go for it. Regardless, it’s the same water heater, but you’ll be covered should anything happen during the warranty period. You will likely pay for the labor, but any defective parts will be covered.

2.) Suppliers. Check out how many local suppliers carry the product. If something should happen, you want parts to be readily available. No one wants to take a cold shower while they wait for a part that’s on order.

Side note, or skip all the Googling and just call us. We know our stuff.

Now, when should your water heater be replaced. You should start keeping an eye on it around the 10-year mark. That’s when most warranty periods are over.

There are ways to maintain your water heater and keep it in tip-top, but I’ll get to that in my next article.
